FILM STUDIES

KEY STAGE 4

Film studies is an exciting option subject, which allows students to study film as an art form. The analytical skills students develop here also complement English Literature and other subjects. Students examine a variety of award winning independent films, with an emphasis on a key element of film form for each one studied such as: the writer’s craft, aesthetics, representation and cinematography.

Six core films studied during the course include –

‘Let the right one in’
• ‘Singing in the Rain’
• ‘Grease’
• ‘Submarine’
• ‘An Education’
• ‘Little Miss Sunshine’

CURRICULUM TIME

Y10: 2 hours

Y11: 3 hours

ASSESSMENT

Unit 1: (35%) External written exam –US films. Comparing films and film analysis. (1.5 hours)

Unit 2: (35%) External written exam –International films. Study of world films and analysis of key components. (1.5 hours)

Unit 3: (30%) Non-Exam Assessment – film production i.e. planning, creating and promoting an original film segment or writing an original script. The final piece will be a 2-4 minute sequence of a film from a favourite genre such as: comedy, war, science fiction, drama or horror.
